ENTRE CARNE E VERMELHO: CORPO, MEMÓRIA E RESISTÊNCIA NAS OBRAS DE JOÃO CÓSER E ARTUR BARRIO

Resumo

Este artigo explora as interseções entre as obras Silêncio Além da Pele (2024), de João Cóser, e  Livro de Carne (1978), de Artur Barrio, com foco no uso simbólico e material do vermelho. Enquanto Barrio utiliza carne crua para abordar questões de temporalidade e decadência, para além da cor vermelha da carne, Cóser (também autor do artigo) emprega esta cor como construção pictórica performativa sobre seu corpo, criando uma simbologia que transcende a materialidade. A análise é fundamentada em conceitos de Michel Pastoureau, Georges Didi-Huberman e Merleau-Ponty, refletindo sobre a carne como metáfora e presença sensível. O artista/autor também discute a carne como campo de tensão entre o visível e o invisível, entre a vida e a morte, articulando temas de memória, poder e resistência. Nas obras, o corpo e a carne são utilizados como territórios simbólicos e sensoriais, desafiando o espectador a reexaminar as relações entre materialidade e simbolismo na arte contemporânea.

BETWEEN FLESH AND RED: BODY, MEMORY, AND RESISTANCE IN  JOÃO CÓSER AND ARTUR BARRIO´S WORKS

Abstract

This article examines the intersections between João Cóser´s Silêncio Além da Pele (2024) and Artur Barrio's Livro de Carne (1978), with particular attention to the symbolic and material deployment of the color red. While Barrio employs raw meat to engage with themes of temporality and decay — transcending the mere chromatic quality of flesh —, Cóser’s (also the author of this article) appropriates red as a performative, pictorial intervention upon his body, creating a symbolism that transcends materiality. The analysis is grounded in the theoretical frameworks of Michel Pastoureau, Georges Didi-Huberman, and Merleau-Ponty, through which Coser reflects on the notion of flesh as both metaphor and sensitive presence. Furthermore, the artist/author considers flesh as a field of tension between the visible and the invisible, between life and death, thereby articulating themes of memory, power, and resistance. In the mentioned works, the body and flesh are used as symbolic and sensory territories, challenging the viewer to reexamine the relationships between materiality and symbolism in contemporary art.
