BEM VIVER E JUSTIÇA AMBIENTAL: UMA PERSPECTIVA HEMISFÉRICA

Benjamin Kantner

BEM VIVER AND ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE: A HEMISPHERIC PERSPECTIVE

Abstract: Bem Viver emerges from a long lineage of Indigeous and critical thought linking Andean origins to current application across the Amazon Basin and elsewhere in Brazil. As the philosophy of Bem Viver continues its travels, how might scholars, activists, and communities support the creation of coalitional space while respecting Bem Viver’s commitment to the local and relational? Neither a form of multiculturalism or cosmopolitanism, Bem Viver presents opportunities for diverse reciprocities with other social movements while staying situated in its Indigenous roots. This paper explores how the exercise of thinking hemispherically speculates possibilities for collaboration between Bem Viver and United States-based Environmental Justice. Through the creative juxtaposition inspired by Juliet Hooker’s Theorizing Race in the Americas (2017), Bem Viver’s hemispheric relational potential becomes a shared space for resisting racial capitalism and hegemonic knowledge hierarchies.

Key-words: Bem Viver; environmental Justice; hemispherical thought.

Justicia Ambiental. Pensamiento hemisférico.
